Mahama Swears in Emelia Afi Agbenyo and Joseph Asamoah as EC Deputy Commissioners
President John Dramani Mahama has sworn in Emelia Afi Agbenyo and Dr. Joseph Kwaku Asamoah as Deputy Chairpersons of the Electoral Commission of Ghana. The ceremony took place at the Jubilee House on Monday, October 12, 2026.
Their appointments fill vacancies left by two former deputy chairpersons who departed the Commission earlier in 2026. Furthermore, President Mahama urged the new deputy commissioners to exercise fairness, restraint, and fidelity to the law in their service.
Mahama Demands No Preferential Treatment From EC
President Mahama made a strong statement on electoral independence at the swearing-in ceremony. He said as President, he expects no preferential treatment from the Electoral Commission for himself, his party, or his government. Moreover, he called for an institution that applies the same standards to everyone and protects Ghanaians’ right to choose their leaders freely. Therefore, his remarks set a clear tone of impartiality and independence for the newly constituted Commission leadership.
Who Are the New EC Deputy Chairpersons?
Dr. Joseph Kwaku Asamoah is a lawyer, chartered accountant, and lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. He brings more than 17 years of experience spanning electoral administration, public service, legal practice, and academia.
Furthermore, he previously held several positions at the EC including Director of Finance, Director of the Training Centre, and Head of Audit. He also participated in the administration of the 2012 and 2016 general elections. The two appointments fill vacancies created by the resignation of Dr. Bossman Eric Asare on July 31, 2026, and the retirement of Samuel Tettey.
