Cost of Living Still High Despite Economic Stability — Kpebu
Legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has acknowledged that Ghana’s economy has generally stabilised under Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson. However, he warned that the cost of living remains high and that transport fares have not come down.
Kpebu made the comments on Key Points on TV3 on Saturday, October 24, 2026, during a discussion on potential NDC flagbearers, including Dr Ato Forson. Furthermore, he cautioned that the government’s handling of free speech was creating growing disaffection with President John Dramani Mahama and the governing National Democratic Congress.
Kpebu Warns Free Speech Crackdown Will Cost NDC Votes
Kpebu argued that the arrest of persons for comments made against the government was hurting the NDC’s standing with Ghanaians. He said Ghanaians deeply value free speech and would not forgive any administration that tampered with it. Moreover, he predicted that the NDC would win the next general election but with a drastically reduced vote share compared to the 2024 general elections. “They will win, but the votes will drop drastically,” he said. Therefore, he urged the government to allow free expression and address the concerns of citizens rather than respond with arrests.
NDC’s Hamza Suhuyini Defends Party Record
NDC Communications Team Member Hamza Suhuyini pushed back on criticism of the governing party. He said the NDC’s record in government cannot compare to the eight years of the previous New Patriotic Party administration. Moreover, he expressed confidence that the NDC would win the next elections based on its performance in government.
However, he acknowledged that the party would miss the institutional memory of current National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia, who is not seeking re-election. “It is not just his experience, but institutional memory. We will not pretend that we are not going to miss an important figure,” he said. In addition, he assured supporters that the party was working to fill the vacuum left by Mr Nketia’s departure.
Fatimatu Abubakar Backs Bawumia to Win 2028 Election
Former Information Minister Fatimatu Abubakar said NPP flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia would win the 2028 presidential election regardless of whoever the NDC presents as its candidate. She based her prediction on what she described as the failings of the current NDC administration and the strong record of the previous NPP government. As a result, both parties are already positioning themselves ahead of the 2028 contest. The NDC closed nominations for its 2026 National Executive Elections on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, with 137 prospective aspirants picking up nomination forms to contest 14 positions. In addition, the filing of completed nomination forms is scheduled for November 7 to 9, 2026, at the party’s headquarters in Adabraka, Accra.
