Government Pays Over GH¢4.40bn to SSNIT and Second-Tier Pension Obligations
Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has announced that the government has paid over GH¢4.40 billion to the Social Security and National Insurance Trust and for Second-Tier Pension obligations. The Minister made the announcement to highlight the government’s commitment to protecting workers’ pensions. He said the payments show the government’s resolve to manage public money responsibly and meet its obligations. Furthermore, the announcement follows a similar disclosure that the government released GH¢24.8 billion to statutory funds since January 2026.
Payments Protect Workers’ Pensions
Dr. Forson stated that the payments directly protect the pensions of Ghanaian workers. The government made the payments on time and in full. Moreover, the earlier GH¢24.8 billion release to statutory funds supported schools, healthcare, roads, and local development. The Minister stressed that timely releases give funds the resources they need to deliver essential services to Ghanaians. Therefore, the government views these payments as a key part of its fiscal responsibility agenda.
Government Commits to Meeting All Financial Obligations
Dr. Forson said the government remains committed to meeting all its financial obligations. He noted that responsible management of public money is central to the administration’s agenda. In addition, the payments to SSNIT and the Second-Tier Pension scheme demonstrate that the government treats workers’ welfare as a priority. As a result, workers and pensioners can expect the government to continue honouring its pension commitments. However, the Minister did not provide a breakdown of the specific amounts paid to SSNIT and the Second-Tier scheme separately.
