US and Iran Exchange Strikes After Two US Soldiers Killed in Jordan
The United States launched another round of air strikes against Iran on Saturday night. The strikes targeted Iran’s coastal surveillance and air defence facilities. This came after two US soldiers were killed in Jordan on Friday. Another service member remains missing. The US death toll in the conflict has now risen to 16.
Iran Strikes Back at US Bases
Iran responded with drone attacks on two US bases in Kuwait. Bahrain said it intercepted aerial attacks. Iranian state media confirmed that Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz was struck. The IRGC also warned that vessels influenced by the US using unsafe routes would face accidents. Two vessels allegedly ignored Iranian warnings and were involved in what Iran described as an accident.
Ceasefire Collapses as Attacks Escalate
Washington and Tehran struck a preliminary ceasefire deal in June. However, the agreement collapsed within weeks. President Donald Trump declared the deal over on July 8. Washington has since reimposed its blockade of Iranian ports. Tehran has declared the Strait of Hormuz closed. Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei said America’s repeated breaches of the agreement proved that the US president’s signature was worthless.
Civilian Infrastructure Under Fire
The Gulf Cooperation Council accused Tehran of targeting civilian infrastructure after Kuwait reported that a power plant and water distillation plant were hit. Iran said it targeted an air base and a depot used by US forces in Kuwait. Meanwhile, the US said its strikes were exclusively on military targets. In Iran, at least 50 people have been killed and more than 500 injured in US strikes over the past three weeks according to the country’s health ministry.
