The suspended Obuasi SHTS headmaster, Zakaria Abdulai, has spoken publicly about a rape allegation against him. He made his remarks in an interview with radio host Blakk Rasta. The allegation has not been established in court, and Mr Abdulai is presumed innocent.

What Mr Abdulai Said

Mr Abdulai said police cautioned him after a complaint. He added that police granted him self-recognisance bail. He said he is now waiting for court dates.

“I’m waiting for court days,” he said.

He also said he has his own account of the events. He said the committee that investigated the matter heard from both him and the complainant’s side.

“But I have my story,” he said.

This article does not repeat his remarks about the complainant, in order to protect her identity.

The JoyNews Investigation

Mr Abdulai was responding to reports of alleged sexual abuse involving female students at Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS). JoyNews investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni published the report. It is titled “Inside the Dreaded Headmaster’s Bungalow.”

The report highlighted allegations of sexual harassment, assault and rape. It also said school and education authorities received complaints involving other female students months before the suspension.

What the Police Have Said

Police say a student reported an alleged rape to the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) in Obuasi on August 4, 2026.

The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, disclosed on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, that police had arrested Mr Abdulai. The police later confirmed that they have sent the case docket on that complaint to the Attorney-General for study and advice.

Police clarified that the docket covers only that complaint. Therefore, the other allegations will need separate investigations.

GES Action and Party Role

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has interdicted Mr Abdulai pending investigations. The allegations have drawn national attention and calls for accountability and stronger safeguards for students.

Mr Abdulai also served as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Constituency Secretary for Juaben. He had been seeking to contest the constituency chairmanship. However, he withdrew from the race amid pressure within the party.

Presumption of Innocence

None of the allegations against Mr Abdulai has been established in court. He is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
