It Will Be a Miracle for Ghana to Qualify for the 2027 AFCON – Laryea Kingston

Former Ghana international Laryea Kingston says it will take a miracle for the Black Stars to qualify for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Ghana has lost both of its opening games in the qualifiers. As a result, the team sits bottom of Group C with no points.

Black Stars Struggle in Group C

Ghana lost 2-0 to Ivory Coast in its group opener in Bouake. It then lost 4-2 at home to Gambia. Ghana now faces a double-header against Somalia in November.

Ghana has not won an AFCON qualifying game since September 2023. Its last qualifying campaign, in 2024, ended without a win after three draws and three defeats. Furthermore, the team has won only one of its last 12 games.

Kingston: “It Will Take a Miracle”

Kingston spoke candidly about Ghana’s chances. He gave his view to 3Sports.

“Looking at the situation now, it will be a miracle for us to qualify,” he said.

He pointed out that two teams in the group already have six points. That means Ghana must win all its remaining games.

“Two teams have six points it means Ghana will have to win all games. For me, it will be a very difficult and it will take a miracle to turn things around,” he added.

Ghana’s Recent AFCON Record

The Black Stars’ recent form at the tournament has been poor. Ghana failed to qualify for the 2025 AFCON. It was the team’s first absence from the competition since 2004.

Ghana went out in the round of 16 in 2019. After that, it left in the group stage in both 2021 and 2023.

Queiroz Leaves as Coach

Ghana’s poor form in the qualifiers has also cost the team its head coach. Carlos Queiroz left his role by mutual consent. Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren, Ibrahim Tanko and Godwin Attram are now in charge on an interim basis.
