The Asokwa Municipal Health Directorate has opened a dedicated breast cancer screening unit at the Nana Ama Serwaa Health Centre at Kaase, offering free screening services to women throughout October.

The initiative forms part of activities marking Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Health authorities are urging women to prioritize early detection amid concerns over the increasing number of cases being diagnosed at advanced stages. Municipal Director of Health Services Faustina Osei Mensah said women of reproductive age should make breast screening an annual routine.

Over 80% of Ghana’s Breast Cancer Cases Detected at Late Stages

Project Director at Jhpiego Dr. Paa Kobina Forson warned that late diagnosis continues to undermine breast cancer treatment outcomes in Ghana. He said more than 80 percent of women diagnosed with breast cancer in Ghana are detected at Stages 3 or 4.

Furthermore, he stressed that when breast cancer is picked up late, management outcomes are very poor. Therefore, he said detecting women at Stage 1 or Stage 2 gives a much better chance of survival. He added that early detection allows women to survive, care for their families, and contribute to the economy.

Women Urged to Screen Regularly and Conduct Self-Examinations

Faustina Osei Mensah encouraged women to conduct regular self-examinations after menstruation in addition to professional screening at a health facility. She said breast cancer cases in Ghana are increasing and deteriorating, making early detection critical for good outcomes.

Moreover, the campaign is also integrating cervical cancer screening to provide comprehensive services to women who visit health facilities. In addition, the Kaasehene Nana Mensah Bonsu urged women to prioritize their health over wealth by going for regular breast cancer screening.

Asokwa Assembly Strengthens Primary Healthcare Through Screening

Asokwa Municipal Chief Executive Amoh Kamel said the Nana Ama Serwaa Health Centre will serve as one of the key screening points for women in the municipality and across the region. He said the Assembly is working with the health directorate to strengthen primary healthcare, particularly in the prevention and early treatment of breast and cervical cancer.

As a result, health authorities are encouraging women to take advantage of the free screening services throughout October. They stress that early detection means earlier treatment and a better chance of survival.
