“I Expect No Preferential Treatment for My Government and Party” — Mahama Tells New EC Deputy Chairs

President John Dramani Mahama has told the two new Deputy Chairpersons of the Electoral Commission to discharge their functions fairly and without favouring any candidate or party. He made the statement during the swearing-in ceremony on Monday, October 12, 2026.

Furthermore, he said he expects no preferential treatment for himself, his government, or his party. He urged Emelia Afi Agbenyo and Dr. Joseph Kwaku Asamoah to ensure every eligible citizen can participate in the electoral process and every valid vote counts.

New Deputies Replace Departed EC Leadership

The appointments fill vacancies created by recent departures from the Electoral Commission. Dr. Bossman Asare, who was in charge of Corporate Affairs, resigned effective July 31, 2026, to return to academia at the University of Ghana. Moreover, Samuel Tettey, the Deputy Chairperson responsible for Operations, reached the mandatory retirement age.

Therefore, the two new appointments strengthen the Commission’s leadership as it continues its electoral responsibilities ahead of future elections.

Who Are the New EC Deputy Chairpersons?

Emelia Afi Agbenyo currently serves as Deputy Director of Operations at the Ghana TVET Service. She brings experience in public administration, institutional leadership, and nationwide coordination. Dr. Joseph Kwaku Asamoah is a law lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.

Furthermore, he previously held several senior positions at the EC including Director of Finance, Director of the Training Centre, and Head of Audit. In addition, he has more than 17 years of experience in electoral administration, legal practice, and academia.
