Queen Mothers Demand Greater Representation and Financial Support at District Assemblies

DODOWA, GREATER ACCRA, September 9, 2026 — Queen Mothers within the Greater Accra Region have called for greater representation in decision-making at the district level, as well as increased financial support to enable them to contribute more effectively to community development.

The concerns were raised during a maiden engagement between the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs and Queen Mothers of the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs at the House’s hall in Dodowa.

The engagement, held under the theme “Strengthening Collaboration for a Peaceful Homowo Celebration,” focused on strengthening the role of Queen Mothers in promoting peace, unity and development within their communities.

Speaking at the event, Deputy Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, assured the Queen Mothers that their concerns would be compiled and addressed following the engagement.

She said the government recognises the important role Queen Mothers play in their communities and wants them to have greater opportunities to participate in decision-making and development activities.

The Deputy Minister also encouraged traditional authorities to create more space for Queen Mothers to contribute to community governance, noting that their experiences and perspectives could complement the work of Paramount Chiefs and other traditional leaders.

The engagement also highlighted the importance of economic empowerment, healthcare, skills development and knowledge of laws governing chieftaincy.

Hon. Sowah encouraged Queen Mothers to strengthen their engagement with young people, listen to their concerns and work with them to address challenges affecting their communities.

She further called for regular meetings among Queen Mothers to discuss common challenges, share ideas and identify opportunities that could improve the welfare of women, children and families.

The President of the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs, HRM King Prof. Nii Odaifio Welentsi III, also addressed the Queen Mothers as part of the engagement, stressing the importance of collaboration in maintaining peace and unity during the Homowo festivities.

Paramount Queen Mother of the Osudoku Traditional Area, Nana Amponsah Dokua III, also called for greater involvement of Queen Mothers in decision-making.

“Queen Mothers must be involved in decision-making,” she said, stressing the need to recognise their contribution to traditional leadership and community development.

The meeting provided an opportunity for Queen Mothers to raise concerns affecting their roles and welfare, particularly their limited representation at District Assemblies and inadequate financial support.

Officials from the Ministry used the engagement to discuss ways of strengthening collaboration between government structures and traditional authorities.

At the end of the engagement, Hon. Rita Naa Odoley Sowah presented gifts to the Queen Mothers as part of the closing activities.

The engagement forms part of efforts to strengthen cooperation between government and traditional authorities while promoting peaceful Homowo celebrations across the Greater Accra Region.
